Yumthang situated at a height of 11,800 feet is popularly known as “Valley of Flowers”. Located at a distance of 148 kms from Gangtok, it is a paradise for nature lovers with a fascinating blend of flora and fauna and breathtaking scenic beauty. In Spring season wild flowers such as primulae and rhododendrons bathe the landscape in rich colours making it a tourist hot spot. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary over here has 24 species of Rhododendron flowers which bloom from April to May end.
A hot spring located on the right side of Yumthang river is a popular tourist attraction. In addition to a vast green meadow, Lush green forest abounding in Pine and Silver Fir trees throngs the place. While driving towards the valley, one can see cascading waterfalls and streams. Lachen meaning the “Big pass” is situated at an altitude of 2,750 mtrs on the road leading to famous Guru Dongmar Lake. It is 2 hours drive from Lachung and 6 hrs drive from Gangtok. The Scenic Lachen Village starts from Denangya near Munshithang and ends at Cho Lamu”The Source of River Teesta”. Thangu is situated at an altitude of 13,500 ft, It is about 2 hrs drive from Lachen. Tourist can halt for acclimatization at Tourism Department Guest House before proceeding to Guru Dongmar Lake, Muguthang or Cho Lhamu. Guru Dongmar Lake is situated at a height of 1,7800 feet, it is considered one of the sacred lakes of Sikkim by Buddhists and Hindus alike. The Lake remains milky in colour throughout the year and it is believed that Guru Padmasambhava touched the lake while coming back from Tibet. |
